South Buffalo Township is a township in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,785 at the 2000 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 28.0 square miles (72.5 km²), of which, 27.1 square miles (70.2 km²) of it is land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²) of it (3.21%) is water.
Nicholson Island is within the township in the Allegheny River.
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,785 people, 1,013 households, and 808 families residing in the township. The population density was 102.8 people per square mile (39.7/km²). There were 1,048 housing units at an average density of 38.7/sq mi (14.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 99.21% White, 0.14% African American, 0.04% Asian, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.14% of the population.
There were 1,013 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.1% were married couples living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the township the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.1 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $42,222, and the median income for a family was $46,389. Males had a median income of $36,970 versus $21,895 for females. The per capita income for the township was $18,106. About 3.3% of families and 4.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.8% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
